A tragedy widely felt in Melbourne

Dear Arnold,

Your pain was evident from your note and the picture published on The Age website. I wish to express my deep shock at the tragic loss of life in the heart of Jerusalem overnight and in particular, the futility of innocent people being the victims of a suicide bomber.

This tragedy will be even more widely felt in Melbourne because of your family's loss of Malki.

I understand your daughter was aged 15. I did not know her, but as a father of a fifteen-year old son, I have some inkling of the love you had for your child. I offer my heartfelt sympathy for you, your family, and your relatives here in Melbourne.

As a student leader in the 1970's, you were one of the people responsible for getting me involved in politics. I always remember your mentoring and friendship and will do anything I can to see your beloved daughter's memory is not forgotten.
