Malki's Parents Write

Chronicle of a Barbaric Massacre

(Translated from the original Hebrew, which follows below)

Friday 19th August 2011

Whoever believed that the wave of hatred in which you, Malki - and Michal - perished, had receded, learned yesterday how far from reality that dream is.  I, Daddy and your siblings viscerally feel that hatred every moment that passes without you.

Yes, even ten years later, it is still difficult to absorb that you, Malki, will never return home. That there will never be even one more brief hug with you.

What is there left for us?

To see your constant smile in the many photos with which we have surrounded ourselves. To touch, from time to time, those favorite clothes you wore. To delve through the writings you left us – in particular the detailed diary you kept during the last year of your life.

There, for example, after you told me about a disappointing exam grade you had received, you wrote about me: “She took it quite well and tried to encourage me! Crazy about her.

And once you related about Shabbat: “In the afternoon Mommy and I chatted and talked, it was really nice.”

And you wrote of an evening, two days before your last Seder: “In the evening Daddy and us kids went to town to buy food. Daddy didn’t feel too well but he still drove us. We bought sandwiches at NY Bagel. We ate at home and it was really delicious.”

That was you: a pure soul, enthused by every small pleasure. Appreciative of every tiny favor.

I will conclude with the words of the Esh Kodesh whose candid thoughts always touch my heart and are still relevant to us all today:

“How can we strengthen ourselves after the loss of the martyrs who have already been killed, relatives and friends and just other Jews, some of whom touch us as if they are our own lives? And how can we rehabilitate ourselves somewhat despite the horrific news, both old and new?... Only with the knowledge that we are not alone in our troubles, but that He too, the Almighty, is, so to speak, suffering with us, as it is written “I am with them in their troubles.”
